The city of Toronto is really an amalgam of what formerly was six different municipal entities. They are the borough of East York, the old city of Toronto, Etobicoke, Scarborough, York and North York. Toronto is often called ‘a city neighborhoods’, with the residents of each section still calling each area by its original name. Many of the areas and organizations inside those areas operate as if the sections were still separate. So much so, that it would be wise to choose a Toronto real estate agent who works regularly in that particular section, when looking for housing in the area.

Central Toronto used to be all there was of the city of Toronto before the amalgamation. Now it is sometimes called Old Toronto or Downtown Toronto, or Toronto Proper or even just plain Toronto. The core of downtown Toronto is located within this section containing many of the city’s primary tourist attractions. Old Toronto has been extended to include the former borough of East York, which contains many culturally diverse and vibrant neighborhoods. Western Toronto is basically filled with industry and houses that are practically built on top of one another. However, this section is full of beautiful parks and waterways. There are also many inner areas of small businesses created by creatively active locals. Several diverse immigrant communities have also sprung up in this section bringing with them their culture and activities.

North York is more suburban in its general look and feel. It combines cul de sac enclaves and shopping malls with sprawled out condominium developments. There is a very heavy and dense business district that surrounds the North York Civic Centre. The north central tip of Toronto is considered both an exciting and yet relaxing area for tourists. This section of Toronto is also home to York University and Black Creek Pioneer Village. The eastern section is called Scarborough. It has strong and vibrant communities of differing cultural roots. There are many natural spaces that can’t be found anywhere else. Some of these include the Scarborough Bluffs and the Rouge Valley. The very popular Toronto Zoo can also be found within this section of GTA. So if you’re thinking of moving to Toronto, take a long look first at all of the opportunities presented by the various sections. You will enjoy the search guaranteed, before making up your mind. And since you may be in the market to buy a house if you find one, use a Toronto real estate agent as your tour guide.
